SET DESIGN + CONSTRUCTION

During my time at AUB, I produced several set designs using professional- grade drafting and built multiple sets employing industry- standard construction techniques. I initially found my love for set construction and design through assisting various projects while in my first 2 years of study, which later turned into a passion in my third year when I got the chance to witness the development from idea to finished product. The wider art of set construction and the intricacies of designing in film and TV will never fail to inspire me.

PAPER TIGER

DRAFTED BY MYSELF AND TOBY FARRANT

My largest project and greatest achievement to date was a derelict house composite set build, which I produced for a dystopian short film (Paper Tiger, 2025). Throughout this project, I honed the skills I had learn over the previous years, such as joining flats, the use of power tools, and the application of vac-form, as well as more complex skills like bespoke scenery construction and plastering. All control of this build was placed in the hands of Toby Farrant (co-designer) and me.

BFI DIRECTORS LAB

I  was selected along with a handful of students from my cohort to help construct a set commissioned by the BFI (British Film Institute) for their South West Directors Lab. As a team, we worked with the set designers to create an abandoned wharf set. This set had to work for both modern day ( as a renovated art studio) and the 1930s (as an abandoned wharf). This project taught me how to communicate with a designer and how to produce a product for a client. Our responsibilities included standing flats, scenic painting, prop sourcing, and set dressing. The bulk of the work on this project was scenic painting. I fine-tuned my skills at creating different textures, such as varying stages of rust, wood, brick, metal and concrete.

MACHINE OF QUIET KILLING

I took on the role of assisting with the build for Machine Of Quiet Killing to practice my skills and learn from others, in preparation for my own graduation film set. This old warehouse build consisted of one large main room, a ‘shrine’ room, and additional bespoke scenery. I assisted with the construction of the main build, erecting flats, priming flats, and wallpapering. My responsibilities also included using texturing techniques to create an eerie atmosphere.
